I've been learning to knit, so of course while I'm working on projects, I think of all the things I can make in the studio to go along with all the items I dream of knitting someday. ('Someday' is a long ways away as I still have to finish my first project, a blanket. It might have been wiser to start with a smaller first project.) This button came out of those ideas, and I think it would go great as a closure on a shawl, a sweater, or maybe even a bag or purse.
The button is made from a flameworked glass base, then hand-painted with vitreous enamels in a muted rainbow, fading from a peachy yellow at the outside edges to a lavender purple at the center of the pinwheel. Repeated butterfly wing patterns create a mandala that almost looks flowery.
Instead of using a flameworked loop for the back of the button, I opted for a stainless steel loop for two reasons: to allow for plenty of yarn/ fiber to help balance out the weight of the button, and so the button will lay nice and flat when sewn in.
33mm round, 9mm thick, with a 5mm x 9mm steel loop.
