Doodles

2010doodles1Recently, I gave myself a bit of play time in the studio, but was immediately struck with the beadmaker's equivalent of writer's block. As a creative exercise, I opened up a few old journals and started copying my doodles onto a bead. After a few beads, I realized how much joy and playfulness these beads brought with the creative freedom of having no other limits than a white bead, and black paint. And so that spontaneous exercise became its own series, with the intention to remind us to embrace creative play wherever we can.

To craft these pieces, I first shape the base glass in the flame. Once each piece has annealed and cooled, I "doodle" on each piece by painting with vitreous enamel on the surface, covering the piece with playful images and words. Then, each piece is returned to the flame to "melt" the enamels onto the flameworked base.
